about

The exploration of the Universe has been a great inspiration for electronic music artists from the beginning of the Space-Age into the present. Aural Films is commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Moon landing with a new on-going series featuring collections by Space Music artists from around the world.

Volume 4 continues with a collection of music from American Electronic Music artist, Jack Hertz. Read more about what he has to say about Space and Music in the Questions and Answers below:

Q: When did you first become interested in Space exploration?

A: I don't have memories of not being interested in Space. I could not get enough of TV shows like "Lost In Space" and "Ultraman", Mattel's Major Matt Mason toys, and NASA's Space Program. When other kids were outside playing cowboys and Indians. I was under the stairs pretending I was going on missions to outer-space.

Q: What interests you most about Space exploration?

A: The incredible beauty and wonder that it evokes on a cosmic and scientific level. Our life on Earth has been greatly enhanced by the exploration of space. Much of the math, physics, science, and advanced devices we use today, such as the personal computer, were developed in the process of putting humans in space.

Q: Would you travel to space given the chance?

A: Though I am afraid of heights, I think I would do it anyways.

Q: How does the exploration of the Universe effect or inspire your work as an artist?

A: I like to think it is the Universe that is inspired by the work of the artist.

Q: How are ideas from Space exploration used in your work?

A: Looking into the vast unknown, reflecting on the infinite beauty and physics of the Universe. I cannot help but make up my own stories that are ultimately better expressed in sounds than in words.

Q: What are your favorite instruments for making Space music?

A: Synthesizers of all kinds from little noise boxes all the way up to analog polys, digital workstations, and modulars of different kinds.

Q: Is there any relationship between Space exploration and electronic music?

A: Music went into Space long before humans did. Arguably, it was artists who created the launch pad for the dreams that created the reality.

Q: How is Space Music different from popular styles of music?

A: You can travel the across the Universe at the speed of sound.
