about

Aural Films presents "Nocturnes" the new album release by the duo of Sam Knox and Justin Guyer, that goes by the name, Empty Zen. "Nocturnes" is about the passage of time, through a single night. Collecting emotive soundscapes that transport the listener through the many phases of a day and night, dry and wet, light and dark, and so on, that fill the gap between today and tomorrow.

The music contained within Nocturnes is meant to be enjoyed in a certain fashion. You will wish to find a quiet space, preferably at night, and with a minimum of distractions. Laying prone will help keep you still and in fact listening to this while falling asleep is reported to be enjoyable. At any rate, we highly recommend finding or creating scenarios along these lines for maximum enjoyment. Close listening is crucial as the music develops slowly and will reward the invested listener.

The theme of Nocturnes is the passage of time through a single night. Part 1 begins in the late afternoon on a midsummers day. It is warm but there is a breeze and the clouds are gathering. The birds sing as the day draws down and twilight begins. Soon it is overcast and with the gentle roll of thunder, rain begins to fall. Now the light is fading and the once colorful landscape gives way to a backdrop of shadows and shapes rendered in soft gray tones. There are houses about, and from them sounds can be heard rising and falling over the sibilant whispers of rainfall. Time passes and the world falls quiet. A lull in the weather broadens over the land as its inhabitants find their various nesting places and the early stages of sleep begin. Thoughts of the day mingle with the aspirations of tomorrow as a sense of contentment and quiet victory bestows a restful calm. The night deepens and time passes out of mind. The drizzle of rain begins again.

Part 2 follows the subconscious through various stages of dreaming and ends with the awakening of dawn. It is now late at night. There is fitful dreaming, followed by periods of dreamless deep sleep. Experience mingles with imagination as body and mind drift apart. The pulsations of the cosmos bring an elemental influence to bear as well. At last shades of purple fill the predawn sky and slowly the field of stars of above fades into color. Birds begin their morning chorus and the day breaks again.
