about

In a world where 'bigger is better', the imaginations of millions were recently transfixed on the search for something incredibly small...the Higgs Boson. To most people, subatomic particles like quarks, leptons, bosons, hadrons and gluons are just that...subatomic particles that are easily out of sight and out of mind.

The Higgs Boson, named after Nobel Laureate Peter Higgs, was long suspected to be a subatomic particle that does something that no others could...provide mass. Often referred to as the 'God Particle', the search for the Higgs Boson required the need for a supercollider like the 27-km circumference Large Hadron Collider (LHC) near Geneva, Switzerland that could accelerate subatomic conglomerate particles called hadrons at each other at near-light speed, smashing them together, then studying the subatomic particular remains in the shatter pattern. Imagine engineers crash testing cars at a subatomic level, and there you have it.

This album attempts to capture the essence of the search for the elusive Higgs Boson, from the earliest theorizations in 1964 to the announcement of the discovery of the Higgs Boson on 4 July, 2012 as a part of the ATLAS (Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator System) experiment that was constructed inside the LHC specifically for the God Particle quest.

Now you understand the joke where the Higgs Boson walks into the cathedral, only to be met by the friar. "We don't allow your type in here," said the friar, to which the Higgs Boson replied, "You must, for without my presence, you cannot have mass."

Kick back and enjoy the light speed ride on the hadrons. You may find the resulting head-on collision a little on the unnerving side, but the resulting light show is like none other on earth.
