The Pombero is a being originating from Guaraní mythology, and is common in the Argentine areas of Misiones, Corrientes and Entre Ríos. The Pombero is a small, ugly, hairy dwarf, with long arms, huge hands and short legs with inverted feet that disorient those who try to track him down.
The Pombero watches over the forests and wild animals. Although he allows hunting, he becomes furious when he sees that a hunter kills more than he will consume, when a woodcutter cuts wood that he will not use or when anyone unjustifiably causes damage to flora or fauna.
The Pombero will kill all those who unnecessarily deteriorate nature and punish those who either utter his name out loud or imitate his whistle, which is chilling and lasts up to 30 seconds. As punishment for this it scatters domesticated animals, steals tobacco and rum, consumes honey, takes the eggs of hens, and knocks riders from their horses.
Wow... This is a veritable Who's Who of Aural Films' heavy hitters. Wonderful concept, though at more than FIVE HOURS long it seems a bit unwieldy. For a timeless milestone on this theme (often used in circle dancing), check out Irene Papas & Vangelis's ODES (1979), the final track, "Menoussis." Paul Asbury Seaman
